I laughed like I had been driven mad when I read 26 freakin endings. I knew before the game even launched that there was going to be at least a hand full of them. After I had this knowledge I also knew that most of them were going to be troll endings as well. But that is a lot of them. However in my opinion, and in the majority of opinions there are 5 main endings. These endings aid to the story and expand the overall concept of what the meaning of those story elements are meant to represent.
I’m not going to tell you this is the best game ever. For me its the best so far this year, and being part of the “cult followers” of the Nier universe… Correction! It’s probably more accurate that I’m one of the many people that appreciate Yoko Taro’s warped minded… er very creative works of Yoko Taro. hehe *(phew I think they bought it)! Can I mention? That the entire team knocked it out of the park with this one in my opinion. As far as the U.S. version of this game, my personal opinion stands as thus;
- great art style
- Amazing soundtrack
- very good story telling
- impressive voice acting
Whoa whoa there Final! “very good” story? All you yammer on about in games and anime is story this and story that. wtf?
Well I honestly can’t find very much wrong with the game story wise. Every time I had an unanswered question, I just played on until I got the answer. The ratio between suspense to redundancy was minimal. It took me ~50 hours to compete 5 endings. Each time one ended, I went immediately into the next because “I just needed to know”. That within it’s self is no better praise to story telling. So lets get the things I wasn’t very fond of out of the way so I can sing the nerd praise to the game. Opinions vary! this is mine.
*Spoiler Start*
My favorite character out of all of them was 2B (E2). I really wasn’t happy to only be able to play as her with in the first play-through. Her story lasted the whole way. I really just wanted a better exit for her. More of a purpose. Her last words “Oh… Nines” kind of aggravated me a little. I’m sure that was the plan. We all wanted to hear her call him that for so long. In the back of my mind I hoped against hoped that somehow she would be more than a memory at the end. I came up with a bunch of scenarios I would of loved to of seen. Alas, nothing. Not bad writing! just a bummer.
Adam & Eve… too boy band.. NEXT!
Lastly the only other thing I really wanted to see was more from Devola and Popola. Most of the importance I suppose was in written form. How they were so mistreated because of what the other pair of models did to humanity. ie ended it. They felt they had to bottle and endure the abuse because it came with the territory. I’m just glad at the end A2 was able to tell them that they helped. That they in some way atoned for what the other Devola & Popola did. Shame really.
*Spoiler End*
I was pleasantly surprised that I never got bored on my way to the end of the “good” endings. I never felt the need to farm mindlessly for anything. My level was always “in ball park”. For the most part leveling the weapons and pods were pretty easy. Just by doing as many of the side quests that I could got me all the materials needed. After a bit of a break I may go back to get the Platinum trophy for this game. It deserves the attention, but I’m exhausted. Haha
My conclusion for this is a few Q&A’s.
- “Do I need to play the first Nier in order to understand Automata”?
- In short, no. All the important info is in “Archive” form in Automata. Yes it will help out a great deal if you did play the first one. However it is not a priority.
- “What exactly is YoRHa”?
- What I can tell you without spoilers, is It’s just a name for the androids. Taro Yoko wrote a stage play called “YoRHa” which was the story base for Automata. The fine print is in fact spoilers.. sorry 😦
- “This game is confusing. What am I doing wrong”?
- Nothing! Welcome to a glimpse of Taro Yoko.
I had a great experience playing this game. The meaning behind it all was pitched really well. Now I have to go find the soundtrack because… damn!
